Sicilian festivals are a great way to get under the skin of these proud Sicilian people and their culture. They are full of lively music, colorful costumes, and sumptuous food. Celebrations include homage to patron saints, historical events, and mythology. Every town and village has a patron saint that is celebrated with processions through the streets. For some towns this is the biggest event of the year – more important than Christmas! Naro, the town closest to Villa Elena and where my parents are from, celebrates its patron saint, San Calogero on 18 June. Well worth a visit!

Food festivals or ‘sagras’ are held throughout Sicily and celebrate the fruits of their agricultural labours. The Festival of Almond Blossoms held in February began in Naro in 1934 but now takes place in Agrigento. This traditional festival has parades of Sicilian horse and carts, historical costumes, band concerts and fireworks.

There are too many festivals to list on this site but they are well worth being part of.
